#244 Ruby

Compiling Ruby (2.6.5-p114) from source and some debugging with llvm.

Notes

I’ve had enough reason to look at ruby c source in the past, but never taken the plunge to compile it and start playing around in it. Catching Andy Pliszka’s LA Ruby Conf 2014 presentation finally spurred me on to have a go. These are my notes…

LA Ruby Conf 2014 - Introduction to CRuby source code by Andy Pliszka:

Building From Source (v2.6.5)

Get the source and a stable branch:

git clone https://github.com/ruby/ruby.git
cd ruby
git checkout v2_6_5

Make sure I hav ea suitable OpenSSL lib:

$ brew info openssl
openssl@1.1: stable 1.1.1d (bottled) [keg-only]
Cryptography and SSL/TLS Toolkit
https://openssl.org/
/usr/local/Cellar/openssl@1.1/1.1.1b (7,957 files, 17.9MB)
  Poured from bottle on 2019-05-22 at 16:07:11
From: https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/blob/master/Formula/openssl@1.1.rb

Configure compilation (MacOS) for installation to $HOME/myruby with optimisation disabled: -O0 to make debugging easier, and include c-level debug info -g:

$ autoconf
$ ./configure --prefix=$HOME/myruby --with-opt-dir=/usr/local/Cellar/openssl@1.1/1.1.1b optflags="-O0" debugflags="-g" --disable-install-doc

Produces this configuration summary:

make: *** [yes-test-spec] Error 1

3 failures, 1 error - that’s interesting.

The three time-related failures look suspiciously like specs that are not timezone-aware. I’m running UTC+8 by default, but that has changed over time:

2.3.3 :003 > Time.local 2010
 => 2010-01-01 00:00:00 +0800
2.3.3 :004 > Time.local 1930
 => 1930-01-01 00:00:00 +0700
2.3.3 :005 > Time.local 1932
 => 1932-01-01 00:00:00 +0700
2.3.3 :006 > Time.local 1933
 => 1932-12-31 00:00:00 +0700
2.3.3 :007 > Time.local 1934
 => 1934-01-01 00:00:00 +0720

Re-running the tests with my system set to UTC makes these errors go away

For the IPv6, the essential code from the spec is trying to do this:

2.3.3 :025 > family, ip_address, family_name = Socket::AF_INET6, '::1', 'AF_INET6'
 => [30, "::1", "AF_INET6"]
2.3.3 :026 > @hostname = Socket.getaddrinfo(ip_address, nil, 0, 0, 0, 0, true)[0][2]
 => "localhost"
2.3.3 :027 > @addr = [family_name, 21, @hostname]
 => ["AF_INET6", 21, "localhost"]
2.3.3 :028 > Socket.getnameinfo(@addr, Socket::NI_NUMERICHOST)

SocketError (sockaddr resolved to multiple nodename)

Suspecting a bad assumption based on my /etc/hosts configuration, I was able to confirm that by commenting out the second localhost IPv6 definition cleared the error. This entry appears to be for standard link-local naming.

$ cat /etc/hosts
::1             localhost
#fe80::1%lo0     localhost
(...etc...)

With timezone and hosts file changes, make check is now 100% clean:

$ make check

Using myruby

Taking it for a test drive. I use rvm, so first I disable it with rvm use system before trying my new ruby build.

$ rvm use system
$ which ruby
/usr/bin/ruby
$ ruby --version
ruby 2.3.7p456 (2018-03-28 revision 63024) [universal.x86_64-darwin17]

Set the new ruby path:

export PATH=$HOME/myruby/bin:$PATH
export GEM_HOME=$HOME/myruby/lib/ruby/gems/2.6.0
export GEM_PATH=$HOME/myruby/lib/ruby/gems/2.6.0

Check I’m finding the newly-installed ruby:

$ which ruby
/Users/paulgallagher/myruby/bin/ruby
$ which irb
/Users/paulgallagher/myruby/bin/irb

Check irb is functional..

$ irb

rails

So far so good. Next steps: debugging and writing/modifying ruby source?

Debugging

The upstring.rb is a simple script that makes a call to String#upcase. I’m on a Mac, so I’ll use lldb to try c-level debugging.

In this version of ruby, the relevant method in ruby/string.c is rb_str_upcase_bang:

6624 static VALUE
6625 rb_str_upcase_bang(int argc, VALUE *argv, VALUE str)
6626 {
6627     rb_encoding *enc;
6628     OnigCaseFoldType flags = ONIGENC_CASE_UPCASE;
6629
6630     flags = check_case_options(argc, argv, flags);
6631     str_modify_keep_cr(str);
6632     enc = STR_ENC_GET(str);
6633     rb_str_check_dummy_enc(enc);
6634     if (((flags&ONIGENC_CASE_ASCII_ONLY) && (enc==rb_utf8_encoding() || rb_enc_mbmaxlen(enc)==1))

I’ll break on 6634:

$ lldb ~/myruby/bin/ruby upstring.rb
(lldb) target create "/Users/paulgallagher/myruby/bin/ruby"
Current executable set to '/Users/paulgallagher/myruby/bin/ruby' (x86_64).
(lldb) settings set -- target.run-args  "upstring.rb"

LittleCodingKata is my collection of programming exercises, research and code toys broadly spanning things that relate to programming and software development (languages, frameworks and tools).

These range from the trivial to the complex and serious. Many are inspired by existing work and I'll note credits and references where applicable. The focus is quite scattered, as I variously work on things new and important in the moment, or go back to revisit things from the past.

This is primarily a personal collection for my own edification and learning, but anyone who stumbles by is welcome to borrow, steal or reference the work here. And if you spot errors or issues I'd really appreciate some feedback - create an issue, send me an email or even send a pull-request.
